British Gas charged Joe Brown £350 to fix his hot water cylinder, despite having insurance
Boiler breakdown cover, including an engineer's annual check-up of boilers and systems, typically costs between £150 and £200 a year, depending on the precise levels of cover.
But most households do not need to call out an engineer for repairs each year, Which? says.
With an annual check-up costing about £60 (£85 in London), householders could have one and still save anything up to £140 a year by not taking out cover.
The savings could be set aside for when, and if, something does go wrong.
